A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion increased in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
One account, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.
Yet the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in positions right before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," commented an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Politicians are starting to take note.
A new rule introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to political events.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting arena.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
