Cars in Germany's Town Found Smeared with Swastikas in Blood, Law Enforcement Report

Incident location Affected vehicle Local Police
Authorities stated they were contacted by a individual who discovered a car in Hanau covered with red-colored substance

Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.

Officers then located numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.

Police say preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.

A senior political figure stated the attack left him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in 2020.
