The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
